High Surf Advisory, Areal Flood Watch

Statement as of 2:12 PM PST on December 19, 2014

Expires 9:14 PM EST on December 23, 2014

... High surf advisory remains in effect until 10 PM PST
Saturday...

* waves and surf: large swells will produce breaking waves of 24
to 28 feet in the surf zone through tonight. Breakers will
diminish Saturday morning but remain above 20 feet through
Saturday evening.

* Timing and areas affected: large breakers will affect all
coastal areas through Saturday evening. However... south gales
are likely to worsen breaking wave impacts at and around the
time of high tide at south through west facing portions of the
coastline around midday on Saturday.

* Impacts: large surf will make beaches and jetties very
dangerous. Waves of this magnitude can easily sweep people from
jetties into the cold ocean water. Even if waves do not appear
to be dangerous... large sets can arrive suddenly. Do not go out
on jetties and use extreme caution at beaches... especially
around the time of high tide. Do not turn your back on the
ocean.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion.
