Coastal Hazard Statement

Statement as of 4:39 PM EDT on July 29, 2015

Expires 8:00 PM EDT on July 30, 2015

... High rip current risk in effect from Thursday morning through
Thursday evening...

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a high rip
current risk... which is in effect from Thursday morning through
Thursday evening.

* Locations... ocean beaches of New York City and Long Island.

* Rip current risk... high

* surf height... 3 to 5 ft.

* Lightning risk... high

* timing... through the day and into the evening... with the
highest risk in the afternoon and early evening.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Talk to lifeguards and beach officials to
learn about any surf hazards and heed their advice. Pay attention
to flags and posted signs and swim in life guarded areas.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore. Once you are away from the force of the rip current...
begin to swim back toward the beach. Do not attempt to swim
directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

Heat Advisory

Statement as of 3:41 PM EDT on July 29, 2015

Expires 8:00 PM EDT on July 30, 2015

... Heat advisory remains in effect until 8 PM EDT Thursday...

* locations... New York City.

* Hazards... heat and humidity.

* Heat index values... mid 90s late this afternoon... falling to the
mid and upper 70s late tonight... due to similar air temperatures.
Heat index values will reach the mid 90s again Thursday
afternoon due to temperatures in the upper 80s and dewpoints in
the lower 70s.

* Timing... late this afternoon and Thursday afternoon.

* Impacts... prolonged exposure to heat and humidity could result
in heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A heat advisory is issued for New York City when the combination
of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is at
least 95 degrees for two or more consecutive days... or 100 degrees
for any length of time.

To reduce risk during outdoor work... the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health
conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air
conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.

Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that
has air conditioning. To find a NYC cooling center call 3-1-1 or
visit NYC.Gov/oem.
