Areal Flood Warning

Statement as of 2:48 PM EDT on September 30, 2016

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly NJ has extended the

* Flood Warning for...
Sussex County in southern Delaware...

* until midnight EDT Saturday

* at 244 PM EDT... local law enforcement reported widespread flooding
across the area with numerous roads closed due to 12 to 14 inches
of rain that has fallen over the last 48 hours. Local creeks and
streams are cresting... but remain well above flood stage and will
continue to remain above flood stage through tonight. Do not drive
through flooded roads.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Georgetown... Milford... Seaford... Millsboro... Laurel... Lewes...
Milton... Selbyville... Bridgeville... Delmar... Dagsboro...
Millville... Ellendale... Henlopen Acres... Sycamore...
Cape Henlopen State Park... Gumboro... Long Neck...
Ocean View and Blades.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding. If flooding is observed act quickly. Move up to
higher ground to escape flood waters. Do not stay in areas subject to
flooding when water begins rising.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.

Coastal Flood Advisory, Coastal Hazard Statement

Statement as of 3:03 PM EDT on September 30, 2016

Expires 6:00 PM EDT on September 30, 2016

... High rip current risk remains in effect until 6 PM EDT this
evening...
... Coastal Flood Advisory in effect from 7 PM this evening to
2 am EDT Saturday...

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a coastal
Flood Advisory... which is in effect from 7 PM this evening to
2 am EDT Saturday.

* Location... the New Jersey shore and Delaware beaches.

* Coastal flooding... minor tidal inundation flooding is likely
with this evenings high tide, especially back bays.

* Timing... high tide on the New Jersey and Delaware ocean front
occurs between 8 PM and 930 PM. High tide on the back bays,
along Delaware Bay and along Raritan Bay occurs later than the
high tide on the ocean front.

* Surge... around 1 to 2 feet above the astronomical tide.

* Wave heights... 5 to 8 feet.

* Impacts... localized roadway flooding is expected. Some roads may
be closed due to high water.

* Risk of rip currents... there is a high risk of dangerous rip
currents through tonight. Another advisory may be issued at
330 PM for this evenings high tide cycle but if its issued...
the advisory will be for less tidal inundation flooding than
what occurred this morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents. A high risk of rip currents
implies that wind and/or wave conditions will support the
development of very strong rip currents. These rip currents will
be life threatening to anyone who enters the surf.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol
flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

A coastal Flood Advisory means that minor tidal flooding is
expected. Minor tidal flooding often results in some Road
closures. Usually... the most vulnerable roadways will flood.

Do not leave your vehicle at a location that is prone to tidal
flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flood waters. The
water may be deeper than you think it is. You will be putting
yourself in danger and your vehicle may be damaged... leading to
costly repairs.
